The post- standardization of flash memory ecology- the upgrading road of storage new normal
Then I will introduce you the process of storage entering the new normal. As you know, H3C is a manufacturer of storage system. Maybe the perspective I share with you will be different from what you just heard in the morning.
First of all, I would like to share a story with you. I flew from Beijing to Wuhan yesterday and waited 6 hours at the airport. At that time, I was thinking if I had known it earlier, would have chosen to take high-speed railway. In this decade, China has built 20,000 kilometers of high-speed railway, and this traffic ecology has changed our life circle and changed our way of life.
Before talking about flash memory, I want to say flash memory is already changed our entire IT’s ecology, I had not such an obvious feeling when I worked in H3C three years ago. From the requirements of the user to the partners in these two years, we have already seen the profound influence of the flash memory on IT. In a word, the new technology makes everything possible.
This change has made what was impossible before possible. From the perspective of a system manufacture, how to apply flash technology to the business-terminal applications of clients.
As we can see, in addition to the growth of calculation, the data tends to increase geometrically. What does flash memory bring? Apart from computing, we also see that the computing environment is changing rapidly. As you can imagine, the CPU is the original central component to read the data of memory for calculation. In the future, in order to improve the efficiency, more Shared data will be put in the memory and the memory will be used as the driver to calculate.
As a system manufacture, I want to share one of our views. We've been talking about the new normal of storage since last year, and one of the most important points about the new normal is the new normal for flash memory.
Let’s look ahead how the storage system is used?
First of all, it may be some data cache now, but the proportion of controller data is more than application. Relatively speaking, flash memory is quite expensive, which was used to handle the raw data.
Briefly speaking, from the depth of the queue, NVMe provides a greater width and depth, which can accelerate the processing speed and reduce expenses. That is to say: we know the flash memory as a medium, but with the evolution of medium, the surrounding ecosystem will also change. As system manufacturers, in addition to studying the flash memory, we also need to study how to use surrounding environment to make flash memory into a system - a reliable and available system for vast customers to use.
NVMe is far from enough. As the development of long-distance transport, NVMe over Fabric is produced, but I won't go into details because of limited time.
From the perspective of system, how will all storage systems develop next? What you can see on the screen right now are the hardware architectures that almost all storage vendors provide. The controller, which contains memory, is connected to the disk through storage back end, and the front-end is connected to the host via the FC network or via IP or IB, which is a kind of common storage system that we often see in daily life.
What will happen next?
First of all, I just mentioned that SCM will be put into the controller, so that the controller can have a higher and faster response to the front-end business. You can see that the business response time delay can be less than 0.5ms, and the efficiency is improved by about 50%. That’s what SCM brings.
This is the standardization that H3C has been talking about in the past year, or the new normal of flash memory in the storage new normal. I guess you may want ask me what does post-standardization mean, which is also the topic of this lecture.
When you use storage, you are possible to know storage often take the bag for others. You often hear all kinds of complaints from different departments, saying that storage doesn’t work normally. In fact, only 46% of them are actually caused by storage. What is so-called post-standardization? What I want to bring to you is artificial intelligence, but you're probably mainly focusing on making flash memory smarter.
As you can see in this demonstration, it's very likely that the storage system will reach a bottleneck on October 24, or September 25. Some business departments said the system worked well or not at 9:00 am, but you can’t go back to see what happened at 12:00 noon. If you have such a system, it can tell you the delay response is caused by the host or the Internet or the storage itself; and all data can be reflected in this system, you can immediately go back to see all the problems.
The most important thing of artificial intelligence is that it doesn’t know what it is doing but it knows how to make use of the various relationship with others to tell what would happen next.
Finally, I would like to introduce that H3C has the most complete and longest storage product chain in China, covering a whole set of products from flash memory to data backup, which can provide you with the best storage system. Of course, because of such a background, H3C is honored to be the No.1 in the entire light storage market in the first quarter of 2018, and also the No.1 in our entire all-flash system, which also benefits from our wish.
